Misinformation takes center stage as COVID-19 cases double in crisis hit North West Region

Despite the fact many residents in the Northwest Region of Cameroon are of the opinion that corona virus is a myth in Cameroon, the number of COVID-19 cases in the crisis hit North West Region of Cameroon has been on the rise in recent weeks. According to some residents, no one is infected by the novel corona virus in the NW. Some say the recorded number of cases in the region is all a ploy by the government to make more money. Others claim no one knows anyone who has been infected by the virus.

According to the North West Regional Delegate of Public Health, Dr. Kingsley Che Nsoh, the number of COVID-19 cases in the NW has increased in the past weeks. He said NW has recorded 44 confirmed cases. Among which is 26 active cases, 9 recoveries and 9 deaths.

Dr. Nsoh further said 3 out of the 9 deaths occurred in the hospital while 6 occurred immediately after the patients were brought to the hospital. He also confirms all the 9 corpses were buried by medical personnel in the presence of their family members. Dr. Nsoh  added that everyone who came in contact with the deceased COVID-19 patients have been counseled, quarantined and will be tested at the appropriate time.

He concluded by saying the 26 active cases are responding positively to treatment and will be tested again after 15days to know if they have fully recovered.

The government of Cameroon is still battling the spread of COVID-19 in its regions. Note should be taken that Cameroon is one of the highest countries in Africa that has the highest number of COVID-19 cases. There are about 5436 confirmed cases according to African Argument. Irrespective of this upward trend of coronavirus cases, Cameroon has continued to relax measures put in place to contain the spread of the the deadly virus. Classes are said to resume all over Cameroon come june 1st.
